A septic system usually tells you something is wrong well before it fails completely. Catching the early signs is the difference between a routine service call and a major repair.
1. Slow drains everywhere
One slow sink is usually a clog in that line. When every drain in the house slows down at once, the problem is more likely the tank or the drain field.
2. Gurgling pipes
Gurgling when you flush or drain water means air is being pushed through the plumbing - often because the system is full or something downstream is blocked.
3. Sewage smell outside
A faint odor near the tank lid can be normal right after use. A persistent smell around the tank or drain field is not.
4. Suspiciously green grass
If the grass over your drain field is greener and faster-growing than the rest of the yard - especially in dry weather - wastewater may be surfacing instead of soaking in properly.
5. Soggy ground or standing water
Wet spots over the tank or field when it hasn't rained are a strong sign the drain field isn't absorbing water.
6. Backups in the lowest drains
Basement drains, ground-floor showers and tubs are the first places a backup appears. This one is urgent.

7. It's been years since anyone looked
